A low rating is perfect for use with under floor heating while a high rating means the carpet and underlay already offer good insulation and therefore isn t suitable for under floor heating.

A tog rating indicates the effectiveness of a materials heat insulation. Other considerations such as to the weight of the carpet should also be considered when buying. Both underlay and carpet carry a tog rating. If using underlay with underfloor heating you won t need anything above a total rating of 2 5 tog.

The higher a material s tog rating the more effective it will be at retaining heat and the better it will be as an insulating material. Underlays come with a tog rating the higher the tog the better the insulation. Put simply the higher the tog rating the greater the insulation. Carpets with a lower tog rating are ideal for rooms with underfloor heating whereas higher tog ratings are better for typically colder areas. Higher tog carpet combined with underfloor heating is no disaster it will simply slow the heat transfer from the heating system to the room above.
